Principal’s Update 3/8/19

Dear Silver Creek Community,

Please let me take a moment to share some of the work, successes and celebrations we have been working on and engaging in at Silver Creek.  Our mission statement remains the guiding principle in all that we do. “Silver Creek High School is an inclusive community committed to leadership and excellence in academics, the arts, and athletics.” Recently our staff has been sharing the ways in which each of us upholds the mission statement in our everyday work. Please see the attached poster on Inclusiveness for examples of how our staff supports an inclusive community in our school, and be on the lookout for our upcoming Leadership poster.

We believe that all kids and allcadults have the potential to learn and we are harnessing that each and every day!  Some excellent examples include the curriculum work we have been

engaging in to provide additional course offerings; we do this every year. For next year we look to add the following courses: AP Geography (9th Grade), Unified P.E., School of Rock, and Advisory. Our staff has been working incredibly hard to develop curriculum where students can

be appropriately challenged and find reward in the process.

As we put the finishing touches on Advisory, we want to share some guiding principles about this course. Currently, College and Career Curriculum is provided during core class time; in the future this will be absorbed into Advisory and every student will participate. College and Career Planning, also known as the Individualized Career and Academic Plan, is now a requirement of graduation. Advisory will allow us to accomplish this requirement. Advisory will be held twice per week for 35 minutes. In addition to College and Career topics, we will schedule other events during this time, including: class meetings, pep rallies, college representative visits, goal setting, grade check-ups, panels from upperclassmen, Sources of Strength, and much more. We plan to share this curriculum with our community of parents in the coming months and seek feedback. The curriculum is tailored to each grade from 9th to 12th.

We have also been working with the Longmont Police Department, City of Longmont and SVVSD on the traffic flow in and out of our school. We have been studying patterns and seeking approvals for a redesigned traffic pattern. More on this to come in the upcoming school year! As for the upcoming school year, our school start time will be adjusted to 7:45 a.m. The school end time will adjust to 2:45 p.m. Bus routes and late starts will be adjusted accordingly by 15 minutes.

Shout-out to some of our students for their recent incredible successes. Jasmine Kabiri, state champion and national qualifier in Informative Speaking; Katie Lam, state champion in Impromptu Speaking, with Richard Keck and Thomas Hight qualifying for nationals in Public Forum Debate. Hats off to our two National Merit Finalists Max Ruiz and Kendall Lee. We will soon be publishing an extensive list of all of our winter accomplishments to share with you.

Lastly, March is Music-in-Our-Schools Month. Our bands, choral and orchestral groups continue to excel at terrific levels. Recently our Jazz Band took all 1’s and were superior at the Mile High Jazz Festival. Our singers were the most-represented group at all-state among all St. Vrain schools. Our Orchestra produced an incredible show this month, on par with many collegiate level orchestras, given the rigorous material and sophistication of their sound.

Silver Creek continues to be among the state’s and nation’s best schools and we look forward to boasting our students’ recent results in CodeWars, M3 math challenge, and the American Mathematics Competition. We also invite you to our Spring musical, Into the Woods, and to our upcoming spring athletic contests.

SCHS’ calendar of events is located on our website and athletics of the week are tweeted out each Monday.
