Principal’s Update Class of 2018 9.15.16

SAT Test Preparation at Silver Creek High School

Silver Creek Juniors and Parents,

This is an exciting year for your junior students as they will begin preparing for the college application and admissions process. This year, all juniors in the state of Colorado will take the SAT test in April.  Juniors will no longer be taking the ACT.  The importance of the SAT is that this is a college admissions examination.  Generally speaking, the college admissions process is based upon performance on the SAT/ACT and student grade point average.  Other factors such as community service, leadership, and civic participation are also taken into account.  Many colleges also base merit scholarships on SAT/ACT scores.

It is our mission to provide students with the best possible opportunity for academic success both at the high school and  post-secondary levels; in doing so we have improved our SAT preparation this year and hope that you can partner with us for your student’s success.  Please do note that if your student receives free or reduced lunch, we will provide scholarships for their participation in both the SAT workshop and SAT class that will be offered at Silver Creek.  Just mention this to Ms. Arling (in the front office) when submitting the application and we will get the student registered.

NMSQT PSAT INFORMATION

The PSAT/NMSQT exam (Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) will be offered here at Silver Creek on Wednesday, October 19th at 7:30 a.m.  A precursor to the SAT, the PSAT/NMSQT is a great practice tool that provides excellent preparation for the important ACT and SAT college admission exams.  The PSAT/NMSQT is also the sole measure used to determine National Merit Scholarship eligibility for juniors.  This test is voluntary and not mandatory for all students.

There are a limited number of tests available and they will be sold on a first come, first served basis.  To register you must bring $17 (cash or check payable to Silver Creek High School) to Mr. Yeomans in the Counseling Office.  Registration for the PSAT/NMSQT will close on September 22nd, so don’t delay.

Sophomores who would like to take the PSAT/NMSQT exam can sign up with Mr. Yeomans to be on a waiting list.  If spots are available, students will be notified in October.

Don’t wait!  Register now for the PSAT/NMSQT!

SAT Preparation Classes at Silver Creek Second Semester

In order to prepare our students for success upon the college admissions and application process we will be providing SAT test preparation classes at Silver Creek High School.  This program is made available through a generous donation from our Silver Creek Education Foundation.

Silver Creek High School will be offering a test prep class to juniors during second semester. Juniors will attend classes after school either once or twice a week. These classes will begin the first week of the semester and continue until April 7th. All students will take a practice SAT in December in order to determine a baseline score and placement into groups. The cost of the course is $75 which includes the cost of the SAT prep book, two practice tests, and the 14 week course.

Students and parents will need to fill out this google form, print it, and turn it in to Ann Arling at the front office in order to secure their spot. Please note that a limited number of spaces are available for this class and they are offered on a first come, first served basis. Due to the popularity of this program, we respectfully ask that students who register commit to attending all scheduled sessions.

Sign-ups begin September 19, 2016 and continue until the class is full.

If you have any questions, please feel free to email Miss Wood at [email protected]

SAT Workshop with MindFish Boulder hosted at Silver Creek High School October, 2016.

Founded in Boulder, Colorado, Mindfish has spent over 10 years helping thousands of high school students reach their goals on the SAT and ACT. Though standardized tests can seem very daunting, they are very predictable and therefore very coachable.

The Silver Creek Education Foundation is sponsoring a Mindfish SAT test prep workshop on Saturday, October 1 and Saturday, October 8, both starting at 8 a.m. at SCHS. The timing of these test dates are intentionally meant to also help our juniors with the PSAT that will be given on Wednesday, October 19. Both Mindfish SAT classes will be held at Silver Creek High School.

The first Saturday will feature a timed practice. This test is an official practice test released by the College Board and is therefore an extremely realistic practice exam. It is given in an environment that is designed to mimic the conditions of test day and will take approximately 4 hours. Taking realistic practice tests is an essential piece of the test prep puzzle.

The following Saturday will be spent with the students reviewing the test and offering testing strategies. Students will be given back their corrected test with answers. Students will be given a copy of Mindfish’s book, “The Right Way to Take the SAT” and essential strategies will be reviewed. This will take approximately 3 hours.

The cost of this course and all materials will be $75. We are also offering this course free of charge to students on free and reduced lunch.

Please take the time to view www.mindfish.com for additional information.

Practice SAT Exam Open to all Junior Students and it’s Free – November/December

During the November late start we will be hosting a free SAT practice test for students in 11th grade.  This is meant to provide students a free opportunity to engage in the SAT.  Many students have shared that being able to participate in a practice test helped them prepare for the real exam.  This practice exam teaches students time management and exposes them to a true representation of the actual SAT.

To follow-up, students will be given results of which they can use to identify areas of strength and deficiency, which they can concentrate upon.
