Principal’s Update 8/15/17

Welcome Back Raptors and Raptor Families,

I’d like to personally welcome you to the 2017-2018 school year, one that plans to be an exceptional year at Silver Creek High School.  Over the course of the last few months we have been busily preparing for construction, implementing new classes, onboarding new staff and preparing for the classes of ‘18, ‘19’, ‘20 and ‘21!  Today we officially welcomed the Class of 2021.  It was a great day for them to become accustomed to life at Silver Creek with icebreaking activities, introductions, signing on to the Commitment to Graduate banner and attending to all of their classes.  A big thank you to our Raptor Leadership Crew for their student leadership of this orientation day.

New curricular offerings that we are onboarding this year include Anatomy and Physiology, AP Seminar and an opportunity within Government classes to participate in Colorado Courts in the Classroom.  Ms. Owen will be teaching Anatomy and Physiology this year.  This course will align with the prerequisite to get into the Medical Sciences classes at the Career Development Center of St. Vrain.  Not only will students have the opportunity to visit cadaver labs, this year long course will be a rigorous exposure to A&P and allow for further exploration, laboratories, guest speakers and field trips within occupational fields related to A&P.

We also begin our inaugural year of the AP Capstone program, with the introduction of AP Seminar.  This course will focus on research-based writing.  After exploring contemporary academic fields through the Fall semester, every student will select their own research-based theme for which they will be scored internally and externally. This is an excellent entry level class into Advanced Placement and will test the mettle of all scholars preparing them for the expectations collegiate and professional writing.  Taught by Ms. Neufeld, this course will allow students to become eligible for the AP Diploma.

This Fall our school was prestigiously selected to participate in Colorado Courts in the Classroom.  This may be truly a once in a lifetime experience for students, let alone teachers.  Based upon our application we have become one of three high schools in Colorado to host this event.  Our Government classes will engage in deliberating the fate of two actual cases currently under appeal in Colorado.  In October, we will be hosting the Colorado Appeals Court to hear live oral arguments of these cases in our auditorium, with Government classes taking a front seat to the action.  We need you and your Juris Doctorate… If you have a background in law and are interested in volunteering and want to be involved in prepping kids for the case, please contact Mr. David Koctar, who has been instrumental in organizing the event.

Speaking of volunteers, Silver Creek is only as great as the many volunteers we have on board.  We need you and your skills!  We need set builders in the A-Wing, Concessions Volunteers, event helpers and planners.  Silver Creek is a world-class school because of the support our parent population provides.  Want to volunteer?  Please contact the following:

Silver Creek Organization for the Performing Arts – President Angela Brothers [email protected]

Raptor Activity Booster Club – President Kaydene Hubert [email protected]

Silver Creek Education Foundation – [email protected]

Or maybe you would just like to help us in tutoring students.  Please contact me personally, if so interested.

With back to school comes back to school traffic.  As a reminder the school is open at 6:45 AM and students may stay in the library until 3:30 PM.  During the morning traffic routine please use caution while on school grounds.  Students and guests, please use the crosswalks.  Please no U-turns into oncoming traffic to avoid the roundabout.  Please do not use the service entrance behind the A-Wing Auditorium to drop off students.  This year we are running a full scale meal preparation service out of Silver Creek for 20 surrounding schools and will have increased trucking and employee parking within this area.  If dropping off behind the school please pull into a designated parking spot, again avoid u-turns and abrupt maneuvers.  Your children’s safety is of paramount concern for me, please help us with our traffic routines.

While on the topic of safety, if you see something, hear about something or know something that endangers the safety of kids and/or adults at Silver Creek report it to the Longmont Police Department, Silver Creek Administration and/or Safe2Tell.

Please be our guest at the upcoming events:
