Principal’s Update 11.5.19

Greetings Raptor Families and Friends of Silver Creek,

During this month of giving thanks, please let me share a bit of what I am thankful for here at Silver Creek High School.  Many people ask how is the year going, without fail I can answer it is going great! Our kids and colleagues are doing amazing work, Silver Creek’s achievement is at an all-time high.  Our kids are competitive academically, athletically and artistically. Our young leaders are tackling the most impressive feats! We truly are living our mission statement everyday to be, “A community committed to leadership and excellence in academics, the arts and athletics.”

Our App Development class has recently begun participation in the inaugural Congressional Application Challenge.  These students are designing apps to enhance user experiences with everything from schedules to math computation games.  They will be submitting these on to the national competition for further competition. Along with our appsters, the Silver Creek Cyber Patriot program has begun their competitions and team Syntax Error has landed within the top 10% of the national participants, out of over 4200 teams.  We wish them luck as they take on the national competitions throughout the season.

Recently, over 95% of our students participated in the PSAT/NMSQT or PSAT practice exams.  Results are forthcoming and will be released as soon as available. There is no doubt, that our students are prepared as the following students have been selected to continue on in the National Merit Competition and have been named as Semi-Finalists, congratulations to: Colin Ferry, Oscar Laird, Nina Ning, and Kyle Williams!  And congratulations to our National Merit Commended scholars: Joseph Ciminski, Hayden Current, Simon Gerlach, Jake Levin and Katherine Weygandt.

Our Leadership Academy students in the senior year have gained approval and are embarking on their capstone projects.  This awesome opportunity allows students to work with mentors and provide lasting positive impacts to our community and society.  Some of the awesome examples include: Kids Night Out, International Education Work in Madagascar, Visiting Children’s Hospital, Mentoring Middle School and Elementary School Students, Assisting as Student Teachers, Interning With the Airport, and many more.  Want to get involved please contact [email protected] .   Our National Honors Society, has welcomed 70 students into the chapter and will contribute countless hours of community service, leadership and continue to serve as academic, congratulations to our new members.

After a stellar Fall concert series, our musicians and vocalists have had several recognitions.  Come see an upcoming show or the Fall Play, as our kids are impressive performers. One-third of the Combined League Honor Jazz Band were Silver Creek students.  Seven students were selected for the prestigious Western State Honors Orchestra!

As we wind down Fall a few more shoutouts to Unified Bowling who has qualified for the first CHSAA sanctioned Unified Bowling State Tournament!  Congratulations to our Fall athletic teams, who have had plenty of press, please view Mr. DeCamillis’ updates for all of their accomplishments.

We’re off to a great start and I’m thankful we have a thriving community of scholars, leaders, artists and student-athletes. These successes do not happen without dedicated teachers, coaches, kids, and a community rallying behind them.  So get in the game, buy your tickets to Dancing With The Silver Creek Stars, support the Silver Creek Education Foundation’s Buy Nothing/Sell Nothing Fundraiser, join the SCOPA Board, or just come out to an event and join us in cheering for Raptor Nation!

Our next installment will talk curriculum for the 2020-2021 school year.  In the meantime, continue to encourage your Raptor(s) at home, they are working hard, applying themselves and making Silver Creek a great place to be for kids and colleagues alike.

Sincerely,

Erick Finnestead
