Principal’s Update 8.16.16

Welcome Back Raptor Families,

While summer becomes a fleeting memory, let me welcome all of you to the start of the 2016-2017 school year at Silver Creek High School!  This year promises to bring opportunity, innovation, leadership, arts, academics and athletics to a Raptor near and dear to you.  We are very excited as a staff to welcome our incoming class of 2020, new students and all of our returning students.

During the course of the summer many of our teachers were engaged in trainings and professional development that will be on display this school year.  We took a team of delegates to the world conference for the International Society for Technology in Education, held in Denver.  This learning opportunity brought the greatest teachers from near and far to present on behalf of problem-based learning, emerging technologies, and instructional technology practices.  Even Silver Creek was represented as Beth Cerrone, our Computer Science Teacher, presented on behalf of leveraging students as technology experts.  Several other teachers attended Advanced Placement Trainings, scored Advanced Placement papers, taught enrichment camps and spent much time with our student athletes traveling across the state.  While some believe that we take the summer off, we just take the summer to continue getting better!

And, gotten better we have with the addition of several new staff members joining the Silver Creek team:

Shiho Ushijima – Special Education Facilitator

Jacy Riel – Science

Karley Rempel – Science

Kelsey Brax – Math

Jane Coppinger – Math

Rodrigo Anadon – Instructional Technology

Kristi Ehle-Parker – Counseling

Barb Norbomm – Counseling

Kirsten Brown – Social Studies

Meredith Laine – Business

Kathleen Templeton – Receptionist

A few reminders… Please be aware of school dress code and have backs, chests, stomachs and behinds covered at all times.  For pick-up drop-off, we open at 6:45 AM and students must leave by 2:45 PM, if not involved with an approved activity.  Please use the pick-up, drop-off in the front of building and move forward when space permits at all times.  Give everyone a brake, extra time and patience as we have 1350 students attending this year.

We would like to invite you to our Back to School Night (B2SN) on August 24 from 4:30 – 8:00.  Food trucks will be available at 4:30 along with entertainment on the main plaza, freshmen parent presentation in the auditorium at 5:30, and classes 1-8 being conducted from 6:00-8:00 PM.  We encourage you to know your child’s schedule prior to arriving.

Thank you to all of our parent booster groups for your continued support to academics, arts and athletics.  Please consider joining or contributing to one of these organizations; RABC, SCOPA and The Silver Creek Education Foundation.  Your generous support allows us to provide for a world-class education and high school experience.

Last but not least big kudos to a few staff members:  Nikki Tobias for being recognized by the National Endowment for the Humanities and participating in the Steinbeck Scholars Program, Justelle Grandsaert for being recognized by the American Constitution Educator’s Panel for work in the CAP program, Jennifer Mallette for Best Cookie at the Boulder County Fair, and Carmen Rubino for Champion in Novice Cross-Stitch at the Boulder County Fair.

My best to you and your family as we open the 2016-2017 school year at Silver Creek!

Erick Finnestead
