Principal’s Update 4.22.16

Silver Creek Community,

I’d like to take some time in, likely a long overdue, recognition to some of the great things occurring at Silver Creek High School.  While running a small city of teenagers it may be easy to focus on some of the poor decisions or challenges we all face with high school life.  Bye and large our kids continue to achieve at unprecedented levels in the classroom, in the arts, in leadership and in athletics!

Take for instance our team of Moody’s Math Mega Challenge students:  This competition is a mathematical modeling contest open only to juniors and seniors.  Through participation, students gain the experience of working in teams to tackle a real-world problem under time and resource constraints akin to those faced by industrial applied mathematicians.  One of the two teams went to the second round of judging and received “Honorable Mention”.  Only 8.3% of papers submitted for this national competition received this designation and the scholarship prizes that went with it.  The team that received this recognition was David Demers Gosnell, Courtney Dobbins, Maiya Jazwierska, Emily Millican and Will Pelton.  Subsequently, this team has also been invited to the Colorado Council on Mathematics Annual Awards Dinner to be recognized, a rarity for Silver Creek, let alone St. Vrain.  These students will rub elbows with graduate students and researchers being awarded for their work.

This past weekend students from our Future Business Leaders of America team competed at the state competition in Vail.  Molly McCoy was selected to represent Colorado at the national competition in Policies and Procedures and Hunter Johnson was selected as well in the field of Agribusiness.  Congratulations to Mr. McGee and Mr. Tesone for their support.

Joylynn Bockelmann’s Yearbook class was recently recognized for having been selected by Josten’s to their annual Lookbook.  This honor came with the selection of one of our feature articles and will be distributed to high schools across America as an example of excellence.  This comes on the heels of last year’s yearbook being selected as a national cover nominee!

Teacher, Nikki Tobias was recently recognized by the National Endowment for the Humanities.  This summer she was selected by NEH to travel to the Monterrey Bay area and Salinas Valley.  She’ll be embarking on research around John Steinbeck and the areas that influenced his writing.   Be prepared for first hand accounts next year of Cannery Row and Of Mice and Men.

Hats off to Jacob Boettcher in being recognized as the recipient of the Education First honor of representing the United States this summer at the Global Conference on Human Rights, at the Hague.

It’s Earth Day at Silver Creek.  Tonight (4/22/16) we will host several renowned speakers and a screening of Earth.  All this brought to you by the students of SCLA.

Athletically, the boys baseball team is on a roll and ranked number one in the state of Colorado 4A.  Girls swimming is challenging for the conference crown.  Our Girls’ soccer team is battling for first place in the Northern Conference.  Track athletes have posted some impressive highlights including Rylee Andersen breaking her mother’s meet record at the BOCO Invite in the High Jump.

The Silver Creek Theatre Company will be producing the award winning production of Cabaret.   Shows will be held on:

April 28 Thursday –   7PM
April 29 Friday  –  7PM
April 30 Saturday Matinee – 1:30 PM, Evening-  7:30 PM
May 1 – Sunday Matinee  2:00 PM

Our SCLA capstone students have been actively engaged in concluding their year-long efforts.  We’ve recently had a permanent art installation of up-cycled Raptors take flight in our atrium entrance, by Amanda Einig.  This weekend we will host Day of Champions, courtesy of Katie Foster.  Hats off to Calvin Johnson for his numerous community service hours and thousands of dollars donated to local non-profits.  Join us for a golf outing at Ute Creek to support Niwot Youth Sports on May 1.  Be sure to come see all of our students’ great work on May 9 at 6:00 PM at the Evening of Excellence showcasing capstone projects.  We will be joined this night by city and district leadership, the Colorado Commissioner of Education, parents, students, family, community members, and hopefully you.

Lastly, I’d like to recognize our whole community in receiving, for the fourth time in five years, designation as a Top Public High School by US News and World Report.  This honor placed Silver Creek above all high schools in St. Vrain and confirms the hard work which is put in by students, teachers and our community into making Silver Creek a world class school.

As for the future, next year we will welcome a class of nearly 360 9th grade students.  We also have worked with an architect on the expansion of the C-Wing from 9 to 15 classrooms, should this be supported through the bond process.  We are gearing up for our computer science initiative in 16-17 with App Development, Website Management and Computer Science Principles.  We also look to add Anatomy and Physiology to our already robust science offerings in 17-18.

If you have a celebration to share with us, please do as we routinely get this information out on our homepage, twitter and updates like this.

            For our kids and community,

            Erick Finnestead
